VE Day 80th Anniversary – A Night to Remember

The Working Men's Club St Dennis

08/05/2025

A fantastic evening was had by all attending the VE Day 80th Anniversary celebrations held at the Working Men’s Club on the 8th of May. The Parish Council were overjoyed to see so many come to participate in the evening of celebration and remembrance. At 6.30pm the St Denys Church Bell Ringers joined the national ringing of church and cathedral bells, echoing those that would have rung out across towns and villages 80 years ago.

As everyone gathered in the evening sunshine, we enjoyed a host of rousing tunes impeccably played by our very own St Dennis Band. The tributes continued inside as Cllr Clarke welcomed all and was joined on stage by Cllr Kelsey for the reading of three poignant wartime poems, In Flanders Fields by John McCrae, VE Day by Angela Wybrow and Victory Day by Joe Heard.

We were then all treated to uplifting performances by the Imerys Mid Cornwall Male Choir including three of their very talented younger memberswho are also choral scholars at Truro Cathedral. Fabulous music of the era continued with special guest duo Steph Good and Matt Kingdom of the Clay Country Wailers. Exceptional vocals obviously run in the family as Steph was joined by her mum Su Appleton for some old-time classics.

After some light refreshments Rev Chris lead a moving service providing a moment of reflection for us all. The evening culminated in the symbolic lighting of the beacon, a representation of the light of peace stretching across Europe.

The Parish Council would like to express its sincere thanks to all who attended this wonderful community event and to all who contributed in making it a night to remember. Special thanks go to The Working Men’s Club, St Dennis Band, Imerys Mid Cornwall Male Choir and their guest performers, St Denys Bell Ringers, Rev Chris, St Dennis Fire Service, Suez, ClayTAWC and not least our volunteers.
