St Dennis Parish Council Road Safety Monitoring Report
Location: Hendra Road (Bottom - Pole 5)
Monitoring Period: 3 April 2026 – 1 June 2026
Overview
During this monitoring period, a mobile Speed Indicator Device (SID) was installed on Hendra Road to record vehicle movements and speeds in both directions. This is a 20 mph road, so particular attention has been given to how many drivers are travelling at or below the speed limit. The data helps the Parish Council understand driver behaviour and identify any road safety concerns.
Traffic Volumes
A total of 72,887 vehicle movements were recorded during the monitoring period.
Incoming vehicles: 21,540
Outgoing vehicles: 51,347
Traffic is significantly heavier in the outgoing direction, although both directions show consistent use of the road.
Typical Speeds
Average speeds are broadly in line with the 20 mph limit:
Incoming average speed: 18.93 mph
Outgoing average speed: 20.11 mph
Incoming traffic:
50% of vehicles travel at 17 mph or below
85% of vehicles travel at 21 mph or below
Outgoing traffic:
50% of vehicles travel at 19 mph or below
85% of vehicles travel at 22 mph or below
Vehicles Travelling at or Below 20 mph
As this is a 20 mph road, it is encouraging to see that the majority of incoming vehicles are travelling at or below 20 mph, and approximately half of outgoing vehicles are travelling at or below this limit. Most remaining vehicles are only slightly above the limit. Overall, most drivers are complying with, or are very close to, the 20 mph speed limit.
Vehicles Travelling Above 20 mph
A proportion of vehicles, particularly in the outgoing direction, are travelling in the 20 to 25 mph range, with a smaller number exceeding this. Speeds above 30 mph appear to be relatively uncommon, indicating that while some drivers exceed the limit, most do so only marginally.
Highest Speeds Recorded
Incoming maximum speed: 42 mph
Outgoing maximum speed: 51 mph
These speeds are significantly above the limit but represent isolated incidents rather than typical behaviour.
Key Takeaways
72,887 total vehicle movements recorded
Majority of drivers are travelling at or below 20 mph, particularly inbound
Most other vehicles are travelling only slightly above the speed limit
A small minority exceed 30 mph
Highest recorded speed was 51 mph
Conclusion
The data shows that Hendra Road is generally being used responsibly, with most drivers travelling at safe speeds appropriate for a 20 mph road. However, there is a tendency for some vehicles, particularly in the outbound direction, to travel slightly above the limit, and a very small number of significantly higher speeds were recorded. The Parish Council will continue to monitor traffic speeds, use SID data to inform road safety decisions, and work with partners where necessary to address any ongoing concerns.
